With rising greenhouse gas emissions, climate change is occurring at rates much faster than anticipated. While there are positive steps in terms of the development of nationally determined contributions, we need more ambitious plans and accelerated action in order to combat climate change and its impact on the world.
One of the contributors to climate change is the manufacturing of paper receipts. Over 145 million trees, 55 billion litres of water and 14 billion litres of oil are used every year to produce the global consumption of paper receipts and with over 85% of receipts being thrown in the bin, this produces 10 million tons of waste every year. What is more alarming is that most paper receipts are produced using toxins bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol B (BPS) which makes the receipt non-recyclable.
For every ton of recovered paper that is converted into new recycled paper for end uses, 3.6 million metric tons of CO2 emissions are eliminated. Recycling paper reduces emissionsof greenhousegases that cause global warming, butwe can achieve more reductions if we eliminate the use of paper. By reducing1 tonof paper receipts in the African eco-system, we can save 26 500 litres of water, 2500 litres of oil and 17 trees. Each tree helps reduce global warming by capturing and holding carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas.
Amrue is an interactive intelligent receipt that allows customers to view their receipt directly in their banking app, thus doing away with paper. We partner with banks to link our intelligent receipt to their client’s bank card and we also partner with retailers to integrate our technology into their point of sale machines. This way, when a customer makes a purchase with their bank card their receipt is automatically delivered to their mobile banking app. Our solution offers opportunities for both retailers and banks. Retailers can gain insights and engage the customers post-purchase and banks can capture item-level purchase data, which can be used to enhance their operational efficiencies. Customers stay organized with easy access to their receipts, but more importantly, using our technology reduces the need for deforestation, protecting our planet from further global warming.
