our solution is addressing the challenge by providing an alternative to the use of timber this therefore reduces the deforestation activities in the country (in 2017 a study showed that Zambia is losing over 270 000 hectares of forest every year). using an incentive based system we are capturing single use plastic and recycling it into high value products that include outdoor furniture, fence posts, planters etc
Deforestation and poor waste management systems are two challenges that are negatively affecting our environment. Our solution focuses on capturing waste plastic from the point of generation to recycling in into wood and concrete alternatives, we are also training residents of our communities to separate their waste and properly dispose the waste off.
Through our intervention cutting down of trees for timber is expected to drastically reduce because our plastic alternative is much more durable and does not require product maintenance or replacement for example plastic outdoor furniture is much more durable than wooden furniture, it will not be eaten by termites, will not rot, does not require any chemical treatment etc
We have a network of Collectors who collect waste plastic from the environment for a premium, the collectors deliver the waste plastic to Aggregators who in turn supply the recyclable plastic in large volumes to us.
We have been running this program from the end of January 2019 following installation and commissioning of equipment, Newtech is currently manufacturing recycled plastic fencing poles, outdoor furniture and flower pots. Newtech Recycling intends to start producing construction materials such as building bricks, paving stones, decking and cladding materials as well as furniture for schools in the rural areas
