Reliance on firewood for heating purposes is causing massive deforestation in rural Zimbabwe. Introduction of production and use of biogas at household level will have a direct impact on reducing deforestation. Households will have an energy source that can be used for heating and lighting purposes. There is also an opportunity to introduce biogas generators which will benefit women groups who are into food processing, welders and carpenters.
Households can sell excess biogas to nearby towns where electricity is now scarce. There is also an opportunity to upscale and produce biogas at commercial level using rural village groups or partner with small towns and process litter at their respective dumpsites. Biogas powered generators can be used to produce electricity which will be fed into the national grid. The solution when commercialized will not only provide clean and sustainable energy but will improve rural household incomes and create employment
