Climate Change and access to sustainable food, water and income in Ukraine

About Solution

The conflict in Ukraine has had a significant and detrimental impact on human welfare and on social and economic conditions overall. Even prior to the conflict, the country had faced significant long-term challenges related to poverty, demography and its economic structure. Many of the country’s key heavy industries are located in Eastern Ukraine, and have experienced long-standing decline. This has been further exacerbated by trade disputes and outbreak ofconflict. Productivity has decreased and unemployment increased due to large-scale displacement of local populations and closure of mining and construction related industries. The confluence of these factors is further compounded by annual inflation that reached 60% in early 2015.Ukraine became the ninth largest country in the world in terms of the number of Internally Displaced Persons.Conflict, displacement and business disruptions resulted in increased unemployment. The number of unemployed is gradually increasing further because of the slowdown and closure of more industries in the region. However, the agriculture sector, even with all the challenges, is demonstrating higher resilience to absorb these difficulties. With some reduction in output volumes, due to the above-mentioned difficulties, the agriculture sector’s role as a driver of economic growth is increasing compared to the other sectors of economy.Withfavorableclimatic conditions, fertile soils, and an efficient agricultural sector, Ukraine’s agricultural production exceeds the demand of the domestic market. Given the surplus available for export, Ukraine is has great potential for competitive organic production. Currently only 5.3% of 7.4 mln ha of arable lands suitable for organic farming are used by Ukrainian farmers. In 2017 the overall meat export revenue of Ukraine amounted to 531,2 mln USD (1,23% of overall export), while lamb and mutton meat constitute less than 1% of overall meat production.Production of organic lamb meat of premium quality presents great opportunity to discover untapped potential and create sustainable business opportunities for local producers.Added to this is the fact that negative trends that are observed in production sphere and include aging of fixed assets, technological equipment, and loss of the most skilled staff etc, make it more difficult for Ukraine's economy to get out of systemic crises. Therefore, resolute transition to innovation development model is the only solution to the crisis. ProjectTeam believes that transition to a circular economy would be a real Solution. The circular economy offers practical opportunities for a transition to a waste-free, resilient economic system. New business models make this possible. In this approach, products will last longer, we will use materials in a never-ending cycle and we will get the most out of existing assets such as buildings and machinery.

Circular economy model whereas [1] Touristic infrastructure [2] Sheep breading farm, [3] Clean energy, [4] Sustainable food [5] Access to clean water and sanitation will demonstrate technology development for sustainable Solution.

[1] Ecological lifestyle is a global mega-trend. People want to care for nature and their living environment as a counteraction to the impacts of climate change. This can also be seen in the hospitality business: eco hotels have become an increasingly popular alternative in the tourism industry. By preferring green holiday options, we seek to come closer to nature but also to protect it. For many of us, contact with nature is inherent to a perfect holiday. This is why eco hotels are so popular: they provide opportunities to enjoy beautiful views and heart-touching environments both in and outdoors. Their natural materials and ecological building processes provide the desired look, touch and feel.

After decades of giving way to larger farm enterprises, smaller farms are making a comeback, not only for crops but for raising animals as well. Small-acreage farms can provide suitable space for profitably raising sheep. Starting a new sheep enterprise is a viable option for farmers currently displaced. Therefore, [2] technologically well-designed and constructed sheep breeding farm is laboring efficient, provides a healthy environment for sheep and shepherd and makes the best use of funds.

[3] Power and energy supply is crucial to the technological development of the Solution. Therefore, Project' Team proposes to install Bio-mass heating and energy production system for all facilities that will replaces traditional fossil fuel and offers three main advantages: a) it can be significantly cheaper. For example savings of 80% against all oil types of fuel; b) it can generate significant annual payments for heat generated and benefit from the Renewable Heat Incentive paybacks; c) biomass is carbon neutral as it releases the same amount of CO2 when burned as it has absorbed during its life cycle, therefore reduces general emissions by up to 96%.

Efficiency of using bio gas installation increases by 1.5 times in case of its combined use with the greenhouse. Therefore, Project Team proposes to install [4] a high-tech hybrid greenhouse, too. Greenhouse farming will employ intensive agriculture to provide an increase in crop production of organic fruit and vegetables. Such increase is guaranteed by having more control over creating the optimal climate conditions needed for plant growth. Being in an enclosed space will help prevent crops from suffering damage from climate change related events such as sudden increases or drops in temperature, as well as keeping crops away from birds and other animals. It allows us to use land, water, chemicals and nutrients to optimal effects and to reduce or even eliminate the waste of residual biomass since this can be used elsewhere in the food system. While only 30% of the crops are suitable for human activities, other parts and residual flows from farming are used to produce animal feed. By wasting less biomass, fewer imports are needed such as chemical based fertilizers and remote livestock feed-stocks. The residues and agro flows from the greenhouse organic farming will serve as fuel for biomass installation and later transformed into organic fertilizer for the crops.

In addition to reuse of residual flows, greenhouse farm taking the water from local water sources also makes use of [5] water treatment installation. That is where the agricultural waste water is purified to become irrigation water and comply with relevant requirements. Such water will be then pumped back to the greenhouse to cultivate new vegetables.

[5] Besides production uses, greenhouse provides great opportunities for engaging visitors, both adults and kids, to take part in community gardening. It also provides access to gardening for people who might otherwise not have the opportunity to take care of the crop throughout the whole growth cycle. A greenhouse can become a center of gardening activity during the months that it is impossible to garden outside. It’s also a way to keep a community together year round and a location to teach new techniques to both adults and children.
