Convert PET to Fabric for Uniforms

About Solution

OVERVIEW

Plastic waste is a problem everywhere. 90% of the waste generated in Africa is disposed of to land, typically to uncontrolled and controlled dumpsites. Only about 4% of the waste generated in Africa is recycled, often by informal sectors.

According  to  Practical  Action  Southern Africa  (2006),  more  than  2.5  million  tonnes  of household  and  industrial  waste  are  produced  per annum in urban areas across Zimbabwe.

PROBLEM

Urban areas in Zimbabwe are facing problems of uncollected solid waste that ends up as uncontrolled dumps in communities. Changing consumption patterns and weaker collection systems in our cities results in the leakage of plastic waste into the environment. Indiscriminate dumping into urban areas create risks of disease, flooding and environmental pollution. Due to lack of efficient collection of generated waste, the current waste management practices are causing significant technological, social and environmental impacts. The health department and donor community have focused primarily on treatment of infected patients and provision of clean water. However avoiding re-occurrence through solid waste management has not been fully explored as a long-term solution.

 SOLUTION

New recycling technologies, now enables us to turn PET plastic bottles into soft, polyester thread to make eco-friendly fabric. We will make uniforms for rural schools in Zimbabwe and Africa at large, using the fabric that we will make from PET bottles .This fabric is cheaper than conventional cotton fabric, it dries quickly after washing and it does not require ironing. Not only will we save the planet by reducing the foot print of plastic on the planet, but we will also help reduce deforestation in rural areas by providing a fabric that does not require ironing.

We will access the PET by offering specially designed affordable recyclable  waste collection services .

Our main focus will be on PET bottles, we will pass on the other recyclable waste to other waste collection centers where they will use the waste to make relevant raw materials.
