Enhancing livelihoods through bamboo farming

About Solution

Bamboo farming is a very lucrative business with three dynamics. [climate change/ reafforestation/environmental care and household energy].

This will provide employment, better communities and business opportunities to women and the youth. The Rift valley Region of Kenya has a fertile soil of growing bamboo, though with huge damage of soil erosion and land degradation which has occurred in recent years due to poor land management and logging.

My solution (see attached files) is bamboo propagation and farming, which will help revive the paper industry in Kenya, by processing paper pulp and other products from bamboo and help eliminate and fight against plastic bags,Local farmers from rural Kenya are encouraged to cultivate bamboo in large numbers to be purchased by the company at best market prices thus providing sustainable sources of income to families.

The paper pulp company will employ vulnerable women especially; domestic and gender based violence victims in the localities who will be trained on various processes from propagation, planting and management to pulp production to meet global market standards with branding and quality.

The biggest and major challenge is 'clique' exclusion and lack of information or community sensitization and not given opportunities in how to go about bamboo farming and benefits therein and the markets.

Given the opportunity to start this company and is operational it will provide an open avenue all inclusive for innovative trade in rural areas. This company will operate as a social enterprise where 20% of profits made yearly will be given out to raise awareness against domestic and gender violence to the less fortunate anywhere in Kenya and beyond.
