Senegal, plastic bags are thrown all over the place polluting the environment. Thanks to their longevity, plastic bags accumulate in the ground to form successive layers. The use of plastic bags is responsible for physical pollution of the environment, the clogging effect of the canals and drainage of water and various liquid wastes. Their mismanagement thus causes floods. According to studies, used plastic bags buried under the sand prevent water from infiltrating to reach the groundwater. This leads to the drying up of wells and boreholes. Plastic bags have a very long life because they do not break down easily. A plastic bag takes about 400 years to degrade, it takes 100 years for an aluminum can to do the same and 6 months for a cigarette butt. They also have a negative impact on the oceans. According to Greenpeace, of the 100 million tonnes of plastic produced each year, almost 10% ends up in the oceans. And 70% of plastics sink into the sea while the rest sail according to the currents. The smoke from the incineration of plastic bags contains dioxins that attack the lungs or hormones.
