Smallholder farms in sub-Saharan Africa number around 33 million, represent 80% of all farms in the region, and contribute up to 80% of food production in some sub-Saharan African countries and as well provide up to 60 percent of all jobs on the continent.
Most farmers are not linked to markets for a variety of reasons: remoteness, lack of information, difficulty to access new markets, high transaction costs caused by poor rural infrastructure, low production, and low farm-gate prices to name a few.
SomTech.Agri-solution, a change maker, echo the message that use of mobile technology can go long way in helping poor farmers connectivity to buyers who dominate the formal agricultural market and opens new opportunity to integrate them into the broader Agri-food system. Farm Produce and Mobile Network Operators already exist to implement this initiative. Provide logistics profession to connect farmer to buyers in conjunction with special arrangement for immediate digital payment to farmers upon delivering of their products along with assuring product specification meets customer satisfaction. Buyer will source the products they are purchasing through farmer online platform which will facilitate reliable roots to market and build trust between two trading parties in terms of planning, invest in improved products and enabling reliable trade opportunities
Solution will improve the education and skill of the farmers which does not only enhance labor elasticity, but also increase technological absorption capacity. More educated and skilled farmers will have better capacity to adopt specific technologies and make use of them for accelerating income generation and farm productivity
