Bihar Province of India lies in central east part and have been known for monsoon climate. The state has some unique heritage food which can be marketed and would win win for producer as well as marketers. Makhana(Fox nut) is one among the leading such food item which has been globally recognized. As per a rough estimate 50,000 Tones of Makhana worth INR 550 Crores in market are produced annually.

Similarly Chura (Rice Flake/Poha) procured from Katarani rice of Bhagalpur,Mirchi Rice of Champaran & Basmati Rice of north Bihar are among unique food products. Unfortunately the Chura has yet to establish its recognition as having unique test.Some effort has been made by state and entrepreneurs to establish makhana but it is inadequate in terms of potential size of market.

As being a cash crop, these product has potential of high growth potential. Clusters of these associated agro product in Bihar has yet to realize its full market potential. Use of ICT tools for Backward and forward linkages is still minimal. The primary cluster are less exposed to serious ICT platform of marketing to reach out maximum number of consumers spread in local and global market.We are thinking for multi pronged strategy which leverage IT gains with backward and forward linkages. Our model is as follows:

Setting up of virtual market place (Initially for Makhana) by a dedicated web site for buyers (Bulk and retail buyers including export houses), sellers (Primary producers and middle man) and setting of virtual cooperative of primary producers

Technology and credit facility and Quality certification assistance to the members of virtual cooperative

Data base creation by physical survey of primary producers of processed Makhana from Durbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi & Supaul district and Bulk Buyers of Bihar and Outside Bihar

Provide transactional support to bulk buyers and retailers

Organising of Makahana Fest is 4 metros of India

Food processing industries: Food processing industries is gradually increasing in number in India. Many of them have strong footings in snacks market. They can be the potential customers of Makhana Product. An understanding can be done with them to ensure constant supply of Makhana supposed to be used as raw material for the snacks

Restaurants and Hotels: India has millions of Restaurants and hotels which consume huge quantity of food stuff either processed or raw. A partnership model can be worked out with some of the reputed restaurant chains and periodic supply can be ensured by trade facilitator i.e. Prabhanir environmental consulting Pvt. Ltd.

Shopping malls & multiplex: Indian market place is now transforming resulted into emergence of shopping malls and complex. They can be bulk buyers of Makhana.

As per rough estimate, the market is huge and over 50000 tonnes. but initially we are targeting 20 tonnes processed Makhana (Makhana Pops) to be marketed in a year. Our focus will be on flowing segment: Food Processing Unit, Restaurants and Hotels, tones, Cantonment & Security establishment, Shopping Malls:3 tonnes, Kirana Mandis, Travel and tourism industries

Our strategy is to engage Agric clinic which has been well trained in aspect of Agriculture development. They will be advised to work with Vasudha Kendra (Common Service Centre)/IT Entrepreneurs of selected district. We would have a business model for support/facilitation services. We provide customized training to agric clinic in marketing research and data base management of local producer. The data collected from them will be uploaded in master data base.

Database of potential buyer will be also prepared and uploaded on master data base. An understanding will be made with the potential sellers of the product and buyers to recognize us as trade facilitator. Once online requisition will be received, we will match them with available sellers and kick start process of sales. After settlement of payment related liability sales will be closed.
