Perma farm suburbs

About Solution

African rural communities that largely depend on agriculture as key economic activity, are experiencing a double impact of local environmental degradation and global climate change. Local environmental degradation is largely a result of forest clearing for timber, charcoal and farming lands.

Taking Tanzania as an example, percentage tree cover loss over the last decade was over 3% with primary forest loss of dense canopy of over 15%.

Agricultural loss from adverse events in the previous year amount to an estimated 370 hectares of crop farms in most affected region, Mara.

With a growing youth population in rural communities coupled with a shrinking formal employment space, intervention that create sustainable agricultural models are imperative.

Our solution involves:

□ Consultation in permaculture design and implementation.

□ Using GIS data from drones and CAD to design farms that adapt to and mitigate climate change.

□ Hands on learning experience to stimulate interest and motivate uptake of the solution through our training and resource center as well as workshops and conferences.

□ Permaculture is a set of design principles centered on whole systems thinking, simulating, or directly utilizing the patterns and resilient features observed in natural ecosystems. It uses these principles in a growing number of fields from regenerative agriculture, rewilding, and community resilience.

We implemnent 100% organic farming techniques and use hand tools ensuring that we have minimal impact on soil biodiversity.

Using GIS will allow for accurate topographic data that will improve design and implementation time as well as ensure more accurate mitigation plans.

Adapting permaculture in farming communities will result to increased tree planting, mitigation of weather related topographic changes, preservation of biodiversity and subsequent restoration of microclimates. Secondary effect will be sustainable food systems and individual economic development.
