Empowering the community at the family unit to earn a regular income is the biggest challenge in PNG. Developing this project as a company would require substantial capital. Developing an enterprise at family unit and having a coordinating entity to monitor would ensure effectiveness.
Another issue is that the Department of Agriculture and Livestock is under-resourced to support the Livestock Industry. Having such a set-up at the community level with model.farms and facilities will attract professionals and external agencies to provide much needed support to farmers.
Not everyone in the district will like the idea of livestock farming. However, for those who are interested will be part of a bigger group that will be closely monitored and supervised for quality production of livestock. The demand for meat product is high and the existing suppliers in PNG like Niugini Tablebirds, Zenag, CLTC, and Rumion cannot meet the domestic demand in PNG.
The project will give confidence to the farmers that there is a guarranteed income. RFMS will become the voice to negotiate for a fair price and a secured market. The end result will see the farmers in the community earn a regular income.
The regular income will enable household/family members to send children to school, afford medical fees, build better houses, and acquire other needs like school fees.
