SMEs Renewable/Solar Energy Financing

About Solution

A major cause of climate change is carbon emissions from fossil fuels.

Unfortunately in African countries with poor power supply, typically Nigeria, the predominant contributors are generating sets powered by fossil fuels. Unknown to many people providing solutions by way of renewable energy through solar power units, the culprits are not generators used to power homes.

Rather, the major culprits are generators used at business premises. The reason, though simple, might not be so obvious: USAGE DENSITY..

An apartment covering landmass of 600 sq ft would run on only one generator, for average of 6 or less hours per day, some days, not at all.

Whereas, within same 600 sq ft, there may be more than 10 lockup shops each running its generators for 10 or more hours from Monday to Friday/Saturday. Some business arcades such as the popular Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria are worse off.

As such, one can best imagine the volume of fumes and noise being injected into the atmosphere on daily basis by small businesses in Nigeria and many developing countries with poor power supply.

Unfortunately, solar power units which would have been immediate rescue is practically inaffordable by SMEs. Most of whom can not afford the setup cost. As such, individual house owners who can afford the cost and are attracted by the comparative advantage ended up being the major patrons.

Therefore, to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuels powered generating sets being used by small businesses, there's the need to support them in the setup cost.

This is where a project such as this would come in. By setting up a venture which would assist SMEs in the installation of solar power units for which they would pay back in installments (in lieu of their daily fuel costs and similar expenses that they are already familiar with) over a period at minimum interests and the fund revolves.

This project would therefore be able to serve many purposes in one: create jobs and businesses for solar power technicians and manufacturers, and most importantly, reduce carbon emission and assist with climate change, reduce noise pollution and associated health and environmental implications.
