Sustainable Aquaculture for a healthy living

About Solution

Our solution for sustainable and healthy food for all is fish farming (aquaculture) for rapid urban urbanization.

We have started up a demonstration fish farm under Sanga Aquaponics Center Limited in Uganda.

This will involve farming of 2 types of fish which are tilapia and cut fish.

Fish farming doesn’t require lots or vast land to be carried out. Both tilapia and cut fish spawn thousands of eggs every 4-6 weeks and it takes about 8 months for the fish to reach 450-600 grams which is the perfect market size.

Given the high reproductive rate and short period of growth, fish farming will be able to provide equitable, affordable, sustainable and healthy food for the rapid urbanization as this will provide constant supply to the market at an affordable price.

Fish farming will also provide high-quality and low-cost proteins which will combat the “triple burden” of malnutrition related illnesses, obesity, under nutrition deficiencies especially in urban areas. Fish is widely recognized as “nature’s superfood” as it contributes 17% of animal protein, and 7% of all proteins, high-quality essential amino acids, omega-3 fatty acids, minerals especially iron, zinc, and vitamin D often in highly bioavailable forms, calcium and iodine.

Fish farming will also help create more efficient supply chains and reduce food loss and waste. The rapid urbanization has resulted into increased food waste coupled with pollution due to poor dumping of the food waste that has become a serious issue overtime. Utilization of the food waste used in vermiculture such as different vegetables including carrots, cabbages potatoes among others can be treated as a valuable waste by turning it into fish feeds. The liquid from the food waste during vermiculture will be used by farmers who grow fresh foods as fertilizer. This will be achieved by efficiently recycling food waste within the ecosystem.

Aquaculture will therefore provide sustainable and healthy food for all for the current rapid urbanization.

Thank you.
