Sustainable Energy through (Renewable) Low-Carbon Energy

About Solution

Hydro energy: Energy that is derived from the system of capturing or tapping the force of flowing water into generating electricity is referred to as hydro-energy or hydro-electric power. In situation where power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir, this method is the commonest form of hydroelectric power generation. Majority of the southern Nigeria’s environment is rounded by water-bodies such as rivers, streams and even oceans in some surroundings such as south-eastern and south-western areas. This is the justification for the choice of this project’s type of low-carbon energy supply through hydro-power empowerment. To buttress the above choice of energy supply; Nigeria currently uses same hydroelectric turbines for bulk generation. The familiarity of the Nigerian business environment with this type of energy use; which though, this project proposes to customize its access to individual business unit-supply based; will receive more welcoming attitude than introducing unfamiliar sources that may spark skepticism.

Small-scale hydro energy systems can be completely worked and operated by underserved communities in south-eastern and south-western Nigeria, decreasing costs and making a resourceful and effective utilization of human and natural resources. Our project will promote decentralized off-grid rural electrification in selected underserved communities in south-eastern and south-western Nigeria with micro hydropower systems as a vital element in generating viable rural economies. We plan to build these micro-hydro power generators like paddle wheels for 1kw to 100kw in size at very low costs, low tech. And for each of the participating communities, the project intends to reinforce and fortify the institutional, regulatory and operational capacities of key agencies to deliver decentralized micro hydro-based electricity access to underserved areas and we hope to deploy 40 hydroplants in these areas

The advantages of micro-hydro projects are that they are inexpensive and can be designed to fit our chosen areas and ultimately improve water supplies.

Proposed Implementation Phases & Approaches: (From Registration to Maintenance, Repayment-Methods, Supply and Feed Back Mechanism of the Project)

  • The Home and Business Registration phase: During the phase I of the project implementation; practical steps shall be taken to register all businessowners & business-types through the engagement of local / community-based NGOs
  • Maintenance plan: During the phase II of the field-outing / implementation process, certified technicians shall be identified and registered. These licensed technicians shall be utilized to repair and maintain the low-carbon energy supplygadgets when necessary.
  • Finance & Repayment: The 3rdphase of the project implementation shall identify and establish business-understanding with the community based micro finance banks on achieving a progressive installment repayment with individual business owners, home owners or the project beneficiaries.
  • The equipment / gadget supply stage: At the Phase IV of the project implementation, successful compliant business and home owners shall gain the benefits of accessing their low-carbon energy supply gadgets.

The supply/award method shall by-cut political processes embedded in going through any government agency for the distribution and deployment.

  • Phase V: This phase shall be concerned with the project monitoring and feed-back for improved implementation and subsequent adjustments.
