OffGridBox (Mini grid) provides affordable renewable energy for clean water, automatic irrigation and internet connectivity for rural farmers in the developing world. It is a financially sustainable and environmentally friendly model enabling communities to benefit and transition to solar in an affordable way—all managed by local women entrepreneurs. Each Box, as a mini grid, may provide for 50 farms with internet connectivity, electricity (for homes and water distribution) and purified drinking water (for human and animal consumption as well as irrigation). Additional add ons include: refrigeration for perishable goods among others.
Already, 36 Boxes have been deployed in 9 different countries proving feasibility (but 1 billion people remain in need globally). Through local implementing partners (such as our partner in Rwanda, a local engineering firm), we teach the business model and maintenance procedures to generate revenue, not only to cover salaries of local women and maintenance costs but also to deploy additional boxes--leading to exponential growth. With this innovative technology and mini grid business model, we see a truly sustainable path to help farmers reach higher yields, gain market access, and increase access to technical training.
