We based our research on these 3 recent scenarios in Indonesia (1) 29th July 2018 Lombok earthquake where more than 500 fatalities and more than 1300 injured (2) 28th Sep 2018 Central Sulawesi (Palu, Donggala) more than 2000 fatalities and more than 10,000 injured (3) 22nd Dec 2018 where 426 fatalities, 154 missing, 7200 injured and 40,000 displaced after a tsunami hit coastal towns on Indonesia's Sunda Strait {between the islands of Java and Sumatra}. Tsunami was caused by a volcano (Anak Krakatau) eruption.

Once roads are badly damaged, transportation for delivery is almost impossible.

Our goal is to deploy personal solar powered batteries to disaster prone areas before the disaster happen. If there is no disaster, the personal solar powered batteries will be used as a teaching tool on how to reduce our electricity consumption and save up to 10% of our electricity bills.

However, should there be a disaster, the small personal solar powered batteries is already near the location to do the following:

  1. Place the solar panel under the bright sun and charge the portable battery. Try to place the portable battery in a sheltered area (dry and in the shade) if possible.

  2. Do not connect your mobile phone to the solar panel directly as the current small size of the panel is unable to optimally charge your smartphone. Besides, there is a risk your phone may be stolen.

  3. Check the indicator (such as a blinking light) on the portable battery to ensure that the cable is connected properly.

  4. Ideally, you should have a spare portable battery such that at any point in time, the solar panel should always be charging one battery.

  5. With a charged portable battery, you are able to do the following.

    • Power your phone so that you can contact the authorities your location, check whether your loved ones are safe etc.
    • Power light in the night (especially near relief centers to improve safety)
    • Power a small washing machine (especially if the weather is too cold for handwashing)
    • Power a small fan (useful for cooling down a fever)
    • Power a shaver etc
    • Power a proposed inexpensive Tsunami warning system. Currently still testing a 120dB Vibration Detector Alarm which will be activated should seismic activity is detected.
