Plastic wastes are found in almost every streets in communities across Cameroon and the problem is not only limited to Cameroon, many countries worldwide face the same challenges. Statistics from the Ministry of Environment and the Protection of Nature shows that about 600,000 tons of plastics are produced in Cameroon each year and not up-to 5% of the plastic waste have been recycled.
It is estimated that about 1.1 to 8.8 million metric tons of plastic waste enters the ocean from coastal communities each year. As of 2018, about 380 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide each year. From the 1950s up to 2018, an estimated 6.3 billion tons of plastic has been produced worldwide, of which an estimated 9% has been recycled and another 12% has been incinerated.
Plastics2Products addresses this problem through the following means:
•We use a model of plastic waste collection in communities through which households are educated on separating their plastic wastes from other domestic waste and the plastic waste is collected on a regular basis by our agents. Intern, each household will receives an annual compensation determined by the total weight of plastic waste they accumulated for us.Youths no matter their academic qualifications, age, sex or background, carry out the collection of plastic waste from our communities and supply them to the enterprise and receive a remuneration according to the weight of plastic waste they supply.Plastic2Products melt these plastics at specific temperatures and combine them with sand to produce roofing tiles and paving blocks, which are sold for the construction of houses. These products made out of sand and plastics are very resistant and durable and can last for even a hundred years with no maintenance work needed to be carried out on them since they don’t absorb water making it almost impossible for grasses to grow on them.
