Poverty is more than a lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable source of livelihood. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion from society, as well as lack of participation in decision-making.
Economic growth must therefore be inclusive so as to provide sustainable employment and promote parity. Social protection systems must be implemented to help alleviate the suffering of countries at risk of disasters and to provide support in the face of significant economic risks. These systems will help to enhance the response of those affected by economic losses during disasters, and will ultimately help to eradicate extreme poverty in the poorest areas.
